A uniform does not guarantee competence.
And lack of one does not mean absence of skill.
This is a hard truth—and it needs to be understood.
On scene, authority is often assumed based on role.
But effective leadership is based on awareness, communication, and decision-making.
If someone on scene:
- Has medical training
- Has already stabilized a patient
- Has relevant experience
Then ignoring them is not protocol—it’s poor judgment.
Competence recognizes competence.
The strongest responders don’t need to prove control.
They demonstrate it through action and clarity.
If authority overrides competence, the system fails.
And when that happens, everyone on scene feels it.
