The Volunteer Factor: Asset or Afterthought?

Volunteers are often first on scene.
And too often, they are treated like they shouldn’t be there.

Let’s correct that.

Volunteers:

  • Stabilize situations early
  • Provide critical first aid
  • Relay information
  • Bridge the gap before responders arrive

Yet when official units show up, many volunteers are pushed aside without acknowledgment or inquiry.

This is not just disrespectful—it’s inefficient.

Every second counts in an emergency.
Ignoring someone who has already been working the scene is a failure of awareness.

A trained responder knows how to:

  • Identify useful help
  • Assign simple roles
  • Maintain control without dismissing effort

Respect is not optional in crisis—it’s operational.

Because when volunteers feel dismissed, they stop stepping forward.

And when that happens, the system weakens before it even begins.
